Abstract:
WORK LIGHTS OFF, WINGS ON
Glimpses into the theater between the times

Theater, this enigmatic art form in which contemporaries create worlds live for contemporaries in a common place, has existed in Europe for over 2500 years. The birthplace is considered to be the Dionysus Theater at the Acropolis in Athens, where thousands of people gathered as early as 500 BC for performances in which homage was paid to the gods.
A lot has happened since then: not only the figures on stage have been subject to permanent change, but also the stages themselves - and the social circumstances under which they were performed.
But the questions that theater creators still ask themselves today are always valid: Which stories to tell, in which places, for which audiences - and how?

Topics that seem more urgent than ever in the fall of 2022. Because in the present time, the air for theater is threatening to become thinner. The Corona pandemic has also left its mark on the theater world: in 2020 and 2021, no performances could be given for months - and since then, it has become apparent in many places that not all audiences have found their way back to theaters. Health concerns? Changed leisure needs? Financial worries? How can the theater world meet the challenges of the present? How can theaters become lively places of gathering again?
