“Minimum Viable Performance: interdisciplinary methods for merging innovation and live arts experimentation and training”

Abstract:

This presentation will cover interdisciplinary approaches to innovations in the fields of arts and culture currently in development at the Centre for Arts Innovation at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences in Finland. These approaches are cross-sectoral and built to expand the regional ecosystem for supporting the arts and cultural industry in the Oulu region in association with the City of Oulu’s upcoming European Capital of Culture in 2026. The concept of Minimum Viable Performance (MVP) has been adapted from design vocabularies commonly used in the field of innovation and business development to reflect a method for embedding innovation practices and prototyping of performances into existing production processes for both small live arts producers and larger cultural institutions such as national theatres. The discussion will include cases and project examples to demonstrate the minimum viable performance approach in action and will engage participants to formulate their own applications of the concept.

About our Speaker:

Blair Stevenson is an educator, researcher, and administrator with a broad range of experience in the fields of education, culture, and technology.

Recently, Blair has worked as a Principal Lecturer within the Department of Media and Performing Arts at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk), Finland. Within this role, he has founded Europe’s first master’s degree in Education Entrepreneurship (oamk.fi/mee) as well as supported numerous programs bridging education, innovation, and the creative industries.

"Minimum Viable Performance: Interdisziplinäre Methoden zur Verbindung von Innovation und Live-Kunst-Experimenten und -Training".

Abstract:

In diesem Vortrag werden interdisziplinäre Ansätze für Innovationen in den Bereichen Kunst und Kultur vorgestellt, die derzeit am Zentrum für Kunstinnovation an der Fachhochschule Oulu in Finnland entwickelt werden. Diese Ansätze sind sektorübergreifend und wurden zur Unterstützung der Kunst- und Kulturindustrie in der Region Oulu - in Verbindung mit den Planungen zur bevorstehenden Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2026 - entwickelt. Das Konzept der Minimum Viable Performance (MVP) wurde von Designvokabularen adaptiert, die üblicherweise im Bereich der Innovation und Geschäftsentwicklung verwendet werden, um eine Methode zur Einbettung von Innovationspraktiken und Prototyping von Performances in bestehende Produktionsprozesse sowohl für kleine Live-Kunstproduzent*innen als auch für größere Kultureinrichtungen wie Nationaltheater darzustellen. Die Diskussion wird Fall- und Projektbeispiele beinhalten, um den Minimum-Viable-Performance-Ansatz in der Praxis zu demonstrieren, und wird die Teilnehmer*innen dazu anregen, ihre eigenen Anwendungen des Konzepts zu formulieren.

Blair Stevenson ist Pädagoge, Forscher und Manager mit einem breiten Spektrum an Erfahrungen in den Bereichen Bildung, Kultur und Technologie.

Zuletzt arbeitete Blair Stevenson als Hauptdozent im Fachbereich Medien und darstellende Kunst an der Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk), Finnland. In dieser Funktion hat er den europaweit ersten Masterstudiengang in Education Entrepreneurship (oamk.fi/mee) ins Leben gerufen und zahlreiche Programme unterstützt, die Bildung, Innovation und die Kreativwirtschaft miteinander verbinden.
