Exchange semester for students of an EU * partner university (ERASMUS)

Application process - step by step

Step 1: Nomination

Nomination by your home university via the application portal Mobility Online. Your University has to:

  • fill in your data (via My Mobility Online - Create new application)
  • as soon as your nomination has been accepted you will receive an email with further instructions and deadlines to complete the procedure.

Step 2: Application deadlines

  •         Application for winter semester:
    • nomination deadline: May 15th
    •  application deadline: June 1st
  •         Application for summer semester:
    • nomination deadline: November 15th
    •  application deadline: December 1st

Step 3: Applications from non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens have to inform themselves about entry and residence regulations and apply for them at the German embassy if necessary. Proof of financial resources (usually 720 Euro per month) and proof of health insurance are also required. Confirmation letters from the Erasmus scholarship also serve as financial proof. The 720 Euro per month will then be reduced by amount of the Erasmus scholarship. Step 4: Online application

After you have been nominated by your university, you will receive an email with a link to the Mobility Online application portal, please fill in and submit the application form there.

Step 5: Registration

You will then receive a registration link via email leading you to the Mobility Online registration page. The registration code will be automatically sent to you by email. Your successful registration will also be confirmed via email.

Step 6: Upload the application documents

If you follow the link in the email, you first have to complete your personal data. Then you will proceed to the overview of your application process. Here you will be asked step by step to upload various documents. All steps have to be followed through for your application to be accepted!

The following documents must be uploaded:

  •         Passport photo
  •         Copy of passport
  •         Proof of language proficiency (knowledge of the language of instruction should be at least level B1 of the European reference framework CEFR). The language of instruction, unless otherwise stated, is German. However, most teachers and students speak fluent English and are happy to provide additional explanations and instructions in English and to switch to English whenever required.
  •         Proof of performance from your home university (transcript of records)
  •         Learning Agreement (The LA is a list of the courses that you would like to attend at the design department - the LA form can be downloaded from the Mobility Online portal, it must be signed by you and your university before uploading)
  •         Letter of motivation (German or English)
  •         CV including a photo (German or English)

If you tick the accommodation question with "Yes", you will be asked to upload the following documents later:

  •         Proof of deposit payment
  •         Accommodation Form

Step 7: Costs during the stay

During your studies, you have to think about the following additional expenses: semester fee, housing costs, health insurance, radio fee, food, mobile phone contract and private expenses for your leisure activities. Generally you need at least 800 € per month. You can find more information about the costs here.
